Do one scary thing a day.

During the holiday season, I did as many people do; I visited a few long-time friends that I haven’t seen in ages.  The moment I saw them, I was struck by my overwhelming realization of how much I had missed them.  It wasn’t until I was face-to-face with them, that I realized how much of a recluse or hermit I had actually become.   I had been so comfortable in doing the same things day-in-day-out, that I incrementally disengaged from past friendships.  Staying in my comfort zone actually steered me off-course.  This didn’t happen overnight.  It happened slowly over time; which made it indiscernible.   It wasn’t until I was slapped squarely in the face that I realized how far I had wandered off my path.

This week we will take a short-cut into slapping ourselves back on the path.  We won’t spend time investigating why and what took us off our course.  Instead, we will jump into action with the idea of “doing one scary thing a day” to help keep up moving forward at a faster pace.

As implied in the above, I’m not suggesting jumping out of an airplane or bungy jumping (although it could mean that).  I’m just suggesting stepping out of your comfort zone once a day.

Some examples in the professional arena could be (but not limited to):

  1. Initiate a meeting with your manager and 2nd line manager on a proposal that you have been working on.
  2. Publish a white-paper on your lessons learned in your area of expertise or passion
  3.  Interview one of your executives for a newsletter, blog or articles
  4. Actually check out other job positions outside of your current role — but that shares your transferable skills. (For more information on Transferable Skills, sign up for the on-line continuous professional coaching series <click here>.
  5. Investigate the current salary for your current role and adjacent positions (use your transferable worksheet above).
  6. Student your adjacent positions (not just the direct promotional position — but adjacent roles as well)  (For more information on Adjacent Careers, review previous on-line coaching series class notes Week 23 on “Using Toy Blocks”.  Register for this on-line continuous laser coaching class here)
  7. Review your creative and innovative designs to see if any could be a patent
  8. Meet with a success or career coach to explore other options
  9.  Meet with your direct manager to discuss your Individual Develop Plans and request additional leadership or creative autonomy
