What is a Risk?

What is a Risk?

By Frank Mangini
Project management and risk management are two sides of the same coin. Projects cannot exist without risk. Project managers must understand risks and how to describe risk before they can hope to manage risks. We should all agree what a risk is, how to state a risk and how a risk [...]

Project Lessons from the Big Boys

Project Lessons from the Big Boys

If you read the business news you must be aware of the intense rivalry between the European Airbus Consortium and The Boeing Company dueling to capture the future commercial aircraft market. Both of these companies are in the final stages of major programs to deliver new generation airliners.
These are huge projects worth billions of dollars in both development costs [...]

Project Management – A Profession or What?

Project Management - A Profession or What?

I read sometime ago in some management publication (whose name I can’t recall) that project management will never be considered a profession, but rather, an inherent and necessary skill set. The premise is that most professional and non-professional people in any industry will require project management skills to do their jobs, be it CEO or pharmacist, but there will be no [...]

Risks or Problems – What’s the Difference?

Risks or Problems - What's the Difference?

WOW, there is a lot of wisdom out there.  Reading these blogs is almost equivalent to actually experiencing the trials and tribulations of real world projects.  I think [...]

Beyond Traditional Project Management

Beyond Traditional Project Management

In his 2004 book, eXtreme Project Management, Doug DeCarlo declares that “the world of project management has changed radically, totally and irreversibly”. DeCarlo contends that traditional project management as outlined by the Project Management Institute’s Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge belongs to the past and is not effective or appropriate for most of today’s highly chaotic and high speed projects.

The Trouble with Projects

The Trouble with Projects

In my many years of running projects I have often looked back and asked why it was always so difficult to get things done. Every time the answer came back, “It’s the stupid people from the top to the bottom.” Of course, I also made mistakes, but it was mostly their fault”. This reminds me [...]
